Description Reggio Nell’Emilia Central Motorway Bridge:

In October, 2007, an ensemble of three arched, cable-stayed bridges designed by Santiago Calatrava was inaugurated in Reggio nell’Emilia, near Bologna in Italy. The bridges are the first part of a larger project which will include a new high-speed rail station and other civic improvements.

Plans for the bridges originated in 2002, when the city of Reggio Emilia invited Calatrava to design a new railway station, Stazione Mediopadana, for the high-speed railway line (Treno Alta Velocità or TAV)between Milan and Rome. In addition, he was charged with creating a master plan for the surrounding part of the city, a fragmented area called Mancasale, to improve vehicular access and provide an impressive new entrance from the north. His plan called for integrating the station with three new bridges, designed to connect the Autostrada del Sole (A1) to the city by way of a tree-lined avenue, Viale Trattati di Roma. Calatrava also proposed a highway toll station for cars leaving the Autostrada and a large-scale landscape treatment of the entire area.

The first phase of the project to be completed is the ensemble of three bridges--a central bridge spanning the railway line and the Autostrada, flanked by twin bridges that cross over roundabouts and access roads serving the Autostrada—and the toll station. All three bridges are built of whitepainted steel and reinforced concrete.

The central bridge, which crosses over the high-speed rail line and the Autostrada del Sole (A1 motorway) is composed as a single symmetrical arch, placed longitudinally, which rises to a height of 46m (151 feet)from its base, and spans a total of 221m (725 feet). The bridge has four lanes for automobile traffic and two lanes (one in either direction) for bicycles and pedestrians. The structure is a tied arch from which a steel box-girder supporting the roadway is suspended by cables, placed radially. Cantilever beams, spaced at intervals of 3.5m (11.5 feet), project 9.75m (32 feet) from the box-girder. The roadway of the bridge is made of steel, overlaid with asphalt.
