Description Polideportivo de la Universidad de Navarra:

Frente a un planteamiento urbano previo que apoyaba la dispersión del programa deportivo en volúmenes aislados de muy difícil control, se ha tratado de preservar el carácter singular del Campus Universitario como un gran parque dotacional en el que se otorga el protagonismo al espacio libre cubierto de árboles donde se recortan los edificios.

La idea de condensar los nuevos usos en una pieza unitaria que se excava en la pendiente se poya en un desplazamiento en altura sobre la ladera para evitar invadir el entorno próximo al polideportivo existente. El nuevo edificio de pistas cubiertas -polideportivo, pistas de tenis y frontón- se empotra en la ladera y actúa como fondo edificado de los nuevos espacios deportivos, que se ordenan en terrazas. Se aprovecha el corte en la ladera para apoyar una gran estructura asimétrica orientada hacia la luz uniforme del Norte.

El nuevo frente construido se abre hacia el Campus, que se dibuja con una nueva perspectiva elevada sobre la vaguada y el arbolado, evitando la competencia con otras edificaciones, al tiempo que impide la creación de las inevitables zonas muertas de los frontones y polideportivos cerrados, mientras genera un importante espacio central de parque en continuidad con el ya existente.

Las diferentes anchuras y alturas de los recintos deportivos se absorben mediante cortes diferenciados en la ladera, cuyo talud natural –tratado mediante un gunitado de hormigón- constituye el fondo de las canchas de juego. Sobre esta operación de movimiento y contención se eleva una estructura de pilares y vigas pretensadas de gran luz que cubren el espacio a distancias de seis metros. Los veintiséis vanos quedan cerrados en su parte superior por una cubierta de placas prefabricadas en la que se crean líneas de lucernarios que aseguran la iluminación uniforme de las pistas, cuyo fondo rústico se opone a la reticulada estructura de fachada y al frente continuo de U-glass. En el exterior, un vuelo de hormigón contrapesado protege el camino de acceso y ayuda a definir un orden doble que distingue entre el plano tenso de vidrio traslúcido y la malla transparente del plano sombreado de acceso.

SPORTS CENTRE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NAVARRA

In spite of a previous urban development which supported a spread of sporting programmes in a splintered isolation where management control was difficult, this time it has been a question of maintaining the unique flavour of the university campus, as a great civil park where free space covered in trees is the main feature, in a spot where the silhouettes of buildings can be seen.

The idea of mixing the new facilities into a unifying, whole entity excavated on the slope is backed up by a shift in height on the hillside to avoid encroaching on the immediate environment of the current multipurpose sports complex. The new building with its sheltered courts, a multipurpose facility , - with tennis courts, pelota courts- is embedded in the hillside , to serve as a base construction for the new sporting installations, which are laid out in terrace form, and to underpin a great asymmetric structure facing the even light of the north.

The newly constructed front opens on to the Campus, which is now depicted from a new perspective raised above the water course and the treed area, thus avoiding competition with other buildings, at the same time avoiding the creation of inevitable dead zones of pelota courts and closed multipurpose courts, whilst creating an important central park space to go hand in hand with the existing one.

The different widths and heights of the sporting enclosures are absorbed into the hillside by means of layered cuts -whose natural incline is taken care of by projections of concrete-, and comprise the background for the playing courts. On top of this contentious operation of displacement there arises a structure of pillars and joists, well illuminated at six metres intervals. The twenty six apertures are closed in at the top by a system of prefabricated sheets which contain rows of floodlights which ensure even illumination of the courts, whose rustic aspect at the base is in stark contrast to the lattice framework of the facade and the continuous U-glass front. Outside, a shaft of counterbalanced concrete protects the access road and helps define the double standard, distinguishing between a rigid plan of translucent glasswork and the transparent mesh of the shaded access area.
